Horizon

ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: THE NEW YORK TIMES - NPR - THE GUARDIANFrom pole to pole and across decades of lived experience, National Book Award-winning author Barry Lopez delivers his most far-ranging, yet personal, work to date. Horizon moves indelibly, immersively, through the author's tra

vels to six regions of the world: from Western Oregon to the High Arctic; from the Gal pagos to the Kenyan desert; from Botany Bay in Australia to finally, unforgettably, the ice shelves of Antarctica. Along the way, Lopez probes the long history of humanity's thirst for exploration, including the

prehistoric peoples who trekked across Skraeling Island in northern Canada, the colonialists who plundered Central Africa, an enlightenment-era Englishman who sailed the Pacific, a Native American emissary who found his way into isolationist Japan, and today's ecotourists in the tropics. And always,

throughout his journeys to some of the hottest, coldest, and most desolate places on the globe, Lopez searches for meaning and purpose in a broken world. Barry Lopez is the author of two collections of essays; several story collections; Arctic Dreams, for which he received the National Book Awar

d; Of Wolves and Men, a National Book Award finalist; and Crow and Weasel, a novella-length fable. He contributes regularly to both American and foreign journals and has traveled to more than seventy countries to conduct research. He is the recipient of fellowships from the Guggenheim, Lannan, and N

ational Science Foundations and has been honored by a number of institutions for his literary, humanitarian, and environmental work.

(MAOA OR "Monoamine oxidase A" OR "warrior gene" OR "MAOA-VNTR"OR "MAOA genotype") AND (fMRI OR "functional magnetic resonance imaging" OR PET OR "Positron emission tomography" OR neuroimaging)。 Jackknife Sensitivity ana

Searching For Stars on an Island in Maine

As a physicist, Alan Lightman has always held a purely scientific view of the world. Even as a teenager, experimenting in his own laboratory, he was impressed by the logic and materiality of the universe, which is governed by a

small number of disembodied forces and laws. Those laws decree that all things in the world are material and impermanent. But one summer evening, while looking at the stars from a small boat at sea, Lightman was overcome by the overwhelming sensation that he was merging with something larger than h

imself - a grand and eternal unity, a hint of something absolute and immaterial. Searching for Stars on an Island in Maine is the result of these seemingly contradictory impulses, written as an extended meditation on an island in Maine, where Lightman and his wife spend their summers. Framing the

dialogue between religion and science as a contrast between absolutes and relatives, Lightman explores our human quest for truth and meaning and the different methods of religion and science in that quest. Along the way, he draws from sources ranging from St. Augustine’s conception of absolute trut

h to Einstein’s relativity, from a belief in the divine and eternal nature of stars to their discovered materiality and mortality, from the unity of the once indivisible atom to the multiplicity of subatomic particles and the recent notion of multiple universes. What emerges is not only an understan

ding of the encounter between science and religion but also a profound exploration of the complexity of human existence. Review “Deceptively brilliant, Lightman’s prose is so simple and graceful that it can be easy to miss the quiet, deep sophistication of his approach to the fraught topic of

science and religion. Read this and expect to be invited to think through the nature and implications of our seemingly unavoidable desire for Absolutes.” –Professor Edward J. Hall, Chair of the Department of Philosophy, Harvard University “Thought-provoking….Lightman’s pursuit of certainty involv

es explorations of infinities, large and small; meditations on the problem of consciousness and humanity’s bio-tech future; field trips around Pole Island to look at hummingbirds and ants; and vivid glimpses of his heroes, among them Galileo, Einstein, St. Augustine, and his friend Yos Hut Khemacaro

, a Cambodian Buddhist monk. As he has in previous books, Lightman gives us vast, complicated subjects in lucid, engaging prose.” —Laurie Greer, Politics & Prose “This is a volume meant for savoring, for readerly ruminations, for thinking about and exploring one essay at a time. Lightman’s il

luminating language and crisp imagery aim to ignite a sense of wonder in any reader who’s ever pondered the universe, our world, and the nature of human consciousness.” —Publishers Weekly, *starred review* “One of our most reliable interpreters of science offers a slender book of ruminations that

venture wide and deep. Theoretical physicist Lightman rarely ponders a scientific principle or development without considering its significance in human terms, an approach that is very much in the tradition of Lewis Thomas. Lightman focuses on the logical and mathematical underpinnings of the mater

ial world as it relates to concepts of "reality" and to spirituality broadly defined…. From Newton and Galileo to Einstein and Aristotle, from St. Augustine and the Buddha to contemporary theological thought, Lightman presents a distilled but comprehensive survey of the search for meaning, or the la

ck thereof, in our longing to be part of the infinite.” —Kirkus Reviews “Physicist-novelist Lightman strives to, if not reconcile, at least put religion and science on good speaking terms. These personal and historical essays on religion, science, and religion-and-science are assembled to draw th

e reader ever deeper in…. An illuminating, deeply human book.” —Booklist “Lightman’s logical mind is ever active and fluent, but so is his appreciation of the material world underfoot on his tiny snatch of island. Contemplative, elegant and open-minded, his latest book is an engaging companion to

understanding our longing for connection with the infinite.” —Charleston Post and Courier     “[Lightman] weaves the writings of poets, scientists, and religious scholars as he explores the boundaries of the known (and unknown) world….Lightman’s artful and questioning narrative style easily conveys

complex concepts from physics to philosophy. Recommended for serious but also curious nonfiction readers who enjoy the interplay of big ideas and theories. Both believers and nonbelievers will find much to ponder in this discussion of science and religion, which reads like a soothing meditation.” —

The Association of CT and MRI Usages with the Gross Domestic Product: Comparing North-Eastern Asian Countries under National Health Insurance Coverage

Using CT and MRI in East Asia countries with similar health care systems, Taiwan, Korea, and Japan, along with their leverage toward economic development, are primary concerns of policymakers in setting up public health strategies. Thus, this study aimed to compare the characterization of the natio

nwide direction of high-end medical imaging usage and its influence on the gross domestic product (GDP).Descriptive analysis was conducted, annual growth rate and cumulative CT and MRI usage percentage under the National Health Insurance Coverage. Pearson correlation model analyzed its relationship

with GDP, and panel regression analysis was performed. In addition, Lorenz Curve and Gini Coefficient were also performed to assess the equity status of CT and MRI numbers.CT and MRI usage in both countries grew with the fluctuated pattern recently and moved with a lower speed in the current year. I

n the same year, the yearly growth rate of Korea (average growth rate of 8.72%) was higher than Taiwan (average growth rate of 6.90%) and Japan (average growth rate of 2.19%) for CT scans during the five years. As for MRI scans, Korea indicated the opposite direction in the past three years (2017-20

19) from the other two countries. During that period, Taiwan and Japan decreased from 9.45% to 2.04% and 3.14% to 1.29%, respectively. Meanwhile, Korea elevated swiftly from 4.35% to 50.82%. In addition, CT and MRI usage positively correlated with economic development. CT and MRI installation in bot

h countries has maintained a low inequality status.
