(文/博客來編譯) 'The next Bill Bryson' (New York Times) explores international relations past and present between three East Asian countries – Japan, South Korea and China – in this lively, absorbi

ng travelogue ‘Two tigers cannot share the same mountain’ - Chinese proverb China, Korea and Japan are the neighbours who love to hate each other. But why? Europe has forgiven Germany’s war crimes, why can’t Japan’s neighbours do likewise? To what extent do the ongoing state-level disputes

about island ownership, war history, controversial shrines and statues, missile systems and military escalation reflect how the people of these countries regard each other? They have so much to gain from amicable relations, so why do they seem to be doing their level best to keep the fires of hatred

burning? The Chinese, Koreans and Japanese are more than neighbours, they are siblings from a Confucian family. They share so much culturally, from this ancient philosophy with its hierarchical, bureaucratic legacy, to rice-growing, art, architecture, chopsticks, noodles and much more which has

been passed down from China over millennia. In turn, China has modelled much of its recent industrial and economic strategy on Japan’s post-war manufacturing miracle, and adores contemporary Korean popular culture. Yet still East Asia festers with a mutual animosity which frequently threatens to dra

w the world into a twenty-first-century war. In his previous international best-seller, The Almost Nearly Perfect People, Michael Booth set out to explore the Scandinavian tribes and what they think of each other. In this new book, which blends popular anthropology, history, politics and trave

l, the subjects are these Asian tigers that have endured occupation, war and devastation to become among the richest, most developed and powerful societies on Earth. In this deeply researched, revealing book, he sets off on a journey by car, boat, train and plane through all three countries, endi

ng up in a fourth, Taiwan. Here, he hopes to find a positive story but instead discovers the Taiwanese are not merely in conflict with the Chinese, but they also harbour another, less well-known but still bitter grudge towards an East Asian neighbour. Michael Booth, an award winning Engli

sh author and journalist. He has written five books: - 'Just As Well I'm Leaving - To the Orient with Hans Christian Andersen', which was nominated for an Irish Times first time author award; - 'Sacré Cordon Bleu', a BBC Radio 4 Book of the Week; - 'Sushi and Beyond', which won a Guild o

f Food Writers award and has recently become a best seller in translation in Japan; - 'Eat, Pray, Eat', which was nominated for a British Press Award; - and 'The Almost Nearly Perfect People - Behind the Myth of the Scandinavian Utopia,' which was voted the British Guild of Travel Writer's Bes

t Narrative Travel Book of the last two years, in 2016. He is a broadcaster and public speaker, and writes regularly for a variety of newspapers and magazines around the world, including the Guardian, Monocle, The Times and Condé Nast Traveller.

Integral Sliding Mode Control Optimization for Network-controlled Ball Balancing Platform

This work proposes an optimization scheme for smooth, saturated integral sliding mode control in various types of network communication, including 5G-SA, 5G-NSA, WiFi-6, and experimental WiFi. First, the ball and plate model system is analyzed. Then, an integral sliding mode control with a smooth s

aturation function is designed, and the stability of the controller is analyzed. To optimize the parameter, the Bald Eagle Search (BES) algorithm is implemented by applying the Integral of Absolute Error (IAE), Integral of Squared Error (ISE), and Integral of Time multiplied by Absolute Error (ITAE)

objective functions to constant and stochastic time delays from network communications. The BES algorithm is compared with the Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Particle Swarm Optimizer (PSO) algorithms. The comparison results reveal that BES algorithm outperforms the other algorithms in terms of the conv

ergence rate and final objective function. To speed up the convergence rate and execution time, an accelerated-BES is proposed. The accelerated-BES is also compared with PSO and GA. Finally, the optimized controller is validated by simulations and experiments.

Onegin: A Fourfold Miniaturization of Alexander Pushkin’’s Classic Novel-In-Verse Eugene Onegin

Perhaps it's hard to believe, but so profoundly beloved in Russia is Alexander Pushkin's novel-in-verse Eugene Onegin that many Russians memorize all 5000 of its rhyming lines. American educator Marilyn Stone has created a radically new version of Onegin, distilling it down to just a quarter of its

length, yet virtuosically maintaining the original's precise poetic form throughout. Her partner-in-rhyme, Korean artist Soonran Youn, has complemented each page of verse with an exquisite pen-and-ink drawing, perfectly matching the sparkling poetry. Onegin is a magic lantern offering fascinating im

ages of nineteenthcentury Russia as the backdrop for young Eugene's journey, which starts off with his lackluster life of luxury in Petersburg, then moves out to the countryside, following his larks and his loves as well as his trials, tribulations, and tragedies. We vicariously accompany Gene to br

illiant balls and ballets, see him inheriting an old uncle's country estate where "a brook like silver ribbon curls", then overhear him befriending his romantic young poet-neighbor Vladimir Lensky, and eavesdrop on his sad rendez-vous with fragile young Tatyana in a moonlit arbor, where he breaks he

r heart. While spinning his tale, Pushkin himself steps in now and then, schmoozing directly with the reader - sometimes commenting on his characters and the story line they inhabit, sometimes offering sardonic or humorous views of Russia's roads, feminine feet, and poetry's fickle fads, sometimes m

aking poignant or cynical observations on life. Faithfully echoing the original poetry, Marilyn Stone's verse flows naturally and smoothly from one stanza to the next, while Soonran Yoon's graceful illustrations make the tale even more vivid. Here, then, is an opportunity for Americans to pick up th

e magic lantern that is Onegin, thereby acquiring a unique view of old Russia, absorbing an enchanting poetic form devised by Pushkin, and coming to know the Russians' all-time favorite work of literature. Marilyn Stone grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana, and in 1980 moved to Bloomington, where she

ran a preschool called Sunshine Montessori in her house for several years, and completed a degree in education at Indiana University. She was expecting to teach for many more years, but in 1996 a serious car accident put an end to that plan. As is sometimes the case, however, misfortune created a ne

w opportunity. She had already done some writing, and her friend Douglas Hofstadter, an Indiana University professor, was a great admirer of it. In fact, on his suggestion, in 2001, the two of them co-wrote a novel called Kate and Casey (which will soon be published). Shortly thereafter, Hofstadter

suggested that his friend might enjoy the challenge of composing a highly condensed version of Russian poet Alexander Pushkin’s novel-in-verse Eugene Onegin, of which he had recently published a full-length verse translation. Marilyn Stone was quickly hooked on this quirky challenge, and over the co

urse of three years, she devotedly studied and retyped six different English-language verse translations of Eugene Onegin, all dating from earlier decades. Then, proceeding one stanza at a time, she was able to distill a concise shared essence from these six translations, thereby creating her miniat

ure version. Her resulting Onegin, exactly one quarter the original’s length, faithfully exploits the "Onegin stanza" - Pushkin’s specially devised fourteen-line poetic medium - from start to finish. Facing each Onegin stanza in this volume is an illustration by Soonran Youn, who at the time was an

IU graduate student in fine art from Korea. She enthusiastically delved into the novel and created roughly 100 drawings complementing the text. Soonran Youn’s imaginative pen-and-ink drawings are exquisite, featuring beautifully flowing lines and subtle hints of color. And thus, Alexander Pushkin’s

marvelous verses, Marilyn Stone’s bubbling miniaturizations, Soonran Youn’s refined artistic sensibility, and Douglas Hofstadter’s kind encouragement came together and resulted in this most unusual book.
