ABSTRACT The study tries to analyze whether learning in context will facilitate EFL learners’ vocabulary acquisition, to investigate the effectiveness of teacher’s guidance on the improvement of word pronunciation, and to find out more information about the influence of word length on EFL learne

rs’ vocabulary acquisition. The experiment was conducted over 2 semesters. The participants included two classes of English-majored students at a university in central Taiwan. In the 1st semester, there were 24 students in the advanced class and 17 students in the upper-intermediate class; in the

2nd semester, there were 32 students in the advanced class and 27 students in the upper-intermediate class. Multimedia computers with online vocabulary exercises were used in the experiment. Three types of context were offered for EFL learners’ vocabulary acquisition, including word-alone without c

ontext, word-in-sentence context, and word-in-article context. Half of the words were learned with the teacher’s guidance and the other half with self-learning. The effectiveness and influence of the three context types and word length on vocabulary acquisition were investigated with data from the p

retests and posttests in the 1st semester, and the delayed tests and posttests in the 2nd semester. Two-way ANOVA simple main effect was used to analyze the collected data. The finding shows that word-in-article context is more helpful for EFL learners in word knowledge acquisition, especially fo

r the advanced learners. Second, word-in-article context seems beneficial for word knowledge retention to both advanced and upper-intermediate learners. Third, teacher-guided learning benefits EFL learners in word pronunciation, especially for the upper-intermediate learners. Fourth, word length was
