The rural banks provide services to enable the grass-root segment to access the financial facility to improve their quality of l

However, their performance has been continuing to decline over the past five years, and there is still a lack of studies investigating how rural banks should optimize their resource capabilities to improve performance.This research aims to examine the effect of organizational forgetting on rura

l banks' organizational capabilities and performance in Indonesia. More specifically, this study focuses on two dimensions of organizational forgetting: intentional and unintentional forgetting, and how they affect the three organizational capabilities: innovation, organizational learning, leadershi

p, and their impacts on organizational performance.This study employs a quantitative approach by utilizing a purposive judgment sampling survey of 413 rural bank respondents in Indonesia and performing the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) approach using SmartPLS3. Of the thirteen hypotheses that h

ave been tested, seven were accepted. This study found that unintentional forgetting exists in rural banks and significantly influences innovation capability, organizational learning, leadership capability, and organizational performance. Based on the Importance-Performance Map Analysis (IPMA), unin

tentional forgetting should become the primary concern when the rural bank organization intends to increase performance. Meanwhile, leadership, learning, and innovation capability could become the next priority.The result also proves that intentional forgetting does not have a significant relationsh

ip with all the hypothesized variables. It indicates that instead of implementing intentional forgetting, the rural banks are suffering from prolonged exposure unintentional forgetting. The managers should initiate planning and implementation of organizational knowledge in practice.The research coul

d contribute to some fields:1) This study could enrich the organizational knowledge literature by performing an empirical test, particularly to understand the vital role of unintentional forgetting on organizational capability and organizational performance in rural banks.2) Offering relevant inpu
